Special Needs Cats may be disfigured, injured or ill. They are often passed over for adoption for their cuter counterparts.
These cats may need a greater commitment of time, love and resources from their caretakers, but the rewards are immense.
Nurturing a cat with special needs can be quite a journey, filled with its own challenges but rewarding all the same.
Challenges include:
The rewards are plenty:
Rescue cats with special needs have a significantly lower chance of adoption than others. However, at BMD Cat Welfare, we embrace all rescue cats and kittens as our own. Our mission is to rehabilitate, nurture and rehome all cats, including those with special needs, wherever possible.
Choosing a special needs cat or kitten isn't the conventional choice, and that's precisely why you should consider it.
- Many people and organisations overlook these lovely creatures.
- By adopting one, you pave the way for another cat to come into care.
- Cats with Special Needs teach us essential life lessons about love and prioritising.
- All cats adopted through BMD come with comprehensive support and a trial adoption period.
During the last twelve months, there have been enormous challenges.
BMD acquired a large number of cats, many with special needs, many requiring intensive medical and human (love and nurturing) intervention.
The results have been astounding through the dedication of volunteers and the financial and moral support of the feline-loving community. Most of the cats and kittens we feared for are now living the dream.
On top of this, the ultimate bonus is the joy and delight these special felines now bring to their human families.

Smiley and Roger Ramjet - came into care through an emergency 'hoarding situation' rescue
All cats adopted through BMD come with support and a trial adoption period.
Before offering any cat up for adoption, ALL cats undergo veterinary checks; they are desexed, microchipped, have received their first vaccination, flea and worm treatment, and are monitored by foster carers.
If you support the underdog (or cat in this case), consider adopting a cat with special needs.
A cat adoption is a significant commitment, especially when considering adopting a cat with special needs. If you are thinking about adopting, it's crucial to:
- Understand the emotional disruption that moving can cause for the cats.
- Talk to the carer and thoroughly understand the cat's needs and history.
- Assess your capability to cater to the cat's needs according to your lifestyle, financial capacity, and time commitment.
The Emergency Cat Rescue carried out by BMD volunteer carers and rescuers of over 30 cats and kittens at Lithgow has been the hardest yet.
Due to the circumstances and the condition of these cats and kittens, many would be identified as special needs. They all needed to recover from their ordeal and injuries.
Meet Lucky and Smiley
BMD Rescue workers were asked to help support a sick kitten (Lucky). This was when the Rescue workers became aware of the 30 cats and kittens, all in dire need of medical attention, in the house...
