Assisted Rehoming

Assisted Rehoming of Cats Through BMD

At BMD, we understand there may be situations where people cannot continue caring for their cats or kittens. While we would love to provide a haven for every feline, our resources are sometimes stretched thin.

Thus, we provide an option for assisted rehoming of cats through BMD.

Whether people seek to rehome their cats due to personal circumstances or a lifestyle change, BMD will:

·         Talk to people concerned and provide advice,

·        Advertise cats for assisted rehoming on the BMD website and Facebook page.

The Cats advertised for Assisted Rehoming are NOT held by BMD. BMD merely offers an avenue for people to discuss their concerns and advertise their cats for rehoming.

BMD services towns and villages within the Blue Mountains, Lithgow, Bathurst, and beyond.

BMD Assisted Rehoming:

The BMD Assisted Rehoming service facilitates finding new, loving homes for cats, whose owners, due to a myriad of reasons, can no longer care for them. Whether precipitated by health issues, relocation, or changing family dynamics, assisted rehoming is a service focused on the welfare of the felines and the emotional wellbeing of their owners.

We offer advertising support on our website and Facebook page to help you reach a wide range of potential new forever families for your feline.

Other Options to Consider:

Before embarking on the path of assisted rehoming, it may be helpful to consider alternatives.

  • Would addressing behavioural issues with professional guidance help for you to maintain custody of your feline?
  • Is there a chance your circumstances might change in time?
  • Are there pet-friendly houses available, if you are relocating?
  • Have you considered advertising  your cat through your local FaceBook community group?
  • Have you asked around your neighbourhood and friends to see if they can help rehome your feline?
  • Your local vet or pet shop may assist with notices or word of mouth.
  • You may find an organisation to assist you from the list of Other Organisations Who May be Able to Help.

Understanding Assisted Rehoming:

Understandably, rehoming can be a tumultuous time. However, remember that assisted rehoming empowers you to actively contribute to the future welfare of your cat while maintaining ownership and decision-making abilities. The BMD team is always at hand to guide you throughout the process, offering advice and support.

Preparing Your Cat for Assisted Rehoming:

The initial thrust of assisted rehoming involves collecting comprehensive information about your feline. Which must include:

  • Microchip number,
  • Confirmation of desexing and vaccinations,
  • At least one clear photograph of your cat,
  • Approximate age
  • Brief bio and background of the situation and cat.  Such as: Medical history, behaviour traits, dietary needs, and unique quirks are all valuable data to help potential adopters understand what to expect. This process makes not only "how to rehome my cat" much clearer but also enhances your cat's chances of finding a suitable home quickly.

Managing Enquiries:

You will be responsible for handling the enquiries.  This requires screening applicants, answering questions, and arranging introductory visits. Though time-consuming, it’s imperative in ensuring your cat's transition to a loving environment.

Aiding Rehoming with a Care Package:

Consider preparing a care package for the rehoming family. Familiar items like your cat’s preferred food, toys, bed, or carrier can help make the transition more comfortable for your feline and allay any initial anxiety in its new home.

BMD's Role in Assisted Rehoming:

It is important to understand the role of BMD in the rehoming process. While BMD helps in effectively marketing your cat for rehoming, all correspondence and decision-making remain with you, ensuring a personalised rehoming journey.

* Please note that BMD can only advertise cats with documentation confirming: microchip number, confirmation of desexing and vaccinations.

Assisted Rehoming: Beyond BMD’s Catchment Area:

For those outside the BMD catchment area (Blue Mountains Lithgow, Bathurst and beyond), please see the List of alternative organisations that may be able to assist. Exploring these resources will ensure you find the right support for your "rehome my cat near me" search.

Facing the Emotional Impact of Rehoming:

Rehoming is an emotionally charged process, and it’s normal to feel a certain level of stress and anxiety. Reach out for support as needed. Remember, you are not alone. Many in similar situations have found consolation in knowing their felines have found loving forever homes.

The Silver Lining of Assisted Rehoming:

Beyond the initial emotional challenge, assisted rehoming culminates in providing your beloved cat with a wonderful new chapter, filled with love and care. It also gives another family a chance to experience the joy of pet companionship, an unequivocally enriching experience.

Maintaining the Welfare and Interests of the Cats:

The heart of assisted rehoming is the well-being of the felines involved. From the onset of the process, maintaining the welfare and interests of cats is paramount. This guiding principle helps owners navigate the rehoming journey.

Take Your Time: Making the Best Decision:

The decision to rehome should not be taken lightly. Prioritising your cat’s needs, understanding the incumbent responsibilities, and taking enough time to ensure you have made the best decision can make a tough choice a bit easier.

Seeking Help and Advice Throughout the Process:

BMD offers guidance and support throughout this process. Don't hesitate to reach out when you need help to course-correct or validate your decisions. Our aim of helping you succeed in finding a loving forever home for your feline friend – aligns with yours.

The Journey Beyond:

Remember, while the rehoming process is primarily to ensure the welfare of your feline, it's also about you and your journey. Taking care of your mental and emotional well-being is integral to this journey. Draw strength and solace from the knowledge that you have played an active role in championing your cat's happiness.

A Recap: Assisted Rehoming Simplified:

To recap, the steps to assisted rehoming include understanding your options, gathering comprehensive information about your cat, (which must include microchip number and confirmation of desexing) managing enquiries, providing a care package, and seeking help throughout the process. Proceeding with empathy, taking it step by step, and focusing on the well-being of your cat can make this journey manageable and positive.
